Measure instructions, for a custom fit belt

Choosing the correct belt size is important for a comfortable fit. Our belts are made individually, so please measure carefully before contacting us about a belt.

The belt size refers to the measurement from the point where the buckle is attached to the leather to the centre hole. It does not refer to the total length of the finished belt and does not include the buckle itself.

Measuring an existing belt

If you already own a belt that fits well, this is the most reliable way to find your size.

  1. Lay the belt flat on a table.

  2. Measure from the inside of the leather fold where the buckle is attached.

  3. Measure along the belt to the hole you use most often.

  4. Do not include the buckle in the measurement.

  5. Record the measurement in centimetres.

The measurement to the hole you use most often is the belt size to provide when contacting us. This measurement will become the centre hole of your new belt, allowing adjustment in either direction.

Measuring your body

If you do not have a belt to measure, you can measure your body directly.

  1. Put on the trousers or clothing with which you intend to wear the belt.

  2. Thread a flexible tape measure through the belt loops, or place it around your waist or hips at the position where the belt will sit.

  3. Stand naturally and breathe normally.

  4. Hold the tape measure comfortably snug, but not tight.

  5. Record the measurement in centimetres.

This measurement can be used as the centre-hole measurement when discussing your belt with us.

Please do not measure the total belt length

The total length of a belt is not a reliable way to determine the correct size. Buckle sizes, buckle construction, fold lengths and the position of the adjustment holes can vary between makers.

For this reason, always measure from the buckle fold to the hole you use most often, or measure your body as described above.

If you are unsure

If you are between two measurements or are unsure which size to choose, please contact us before commissioning a belt. We are happy to help.

This measurement method applies to all Studio van de Laar belt widths, including the 15 mm, 25 mm, 38 mm and 40 mm designs.
